Some time ago I was surfing the internet. The primary goal was to find inspiration and current design/business trends. I am sure some of you entrepreneurs can attest to the desire to know what your competitors are doing and the truth is I would be lying if I told you that I do not take time to see how I can “one-up” my competition. Even the billion-dollar companies do this. Just look at Apple vs. Andriod or maybe Marvel vs. DC Comics. Smart entrepreneurs want a competitive edge that will help propel them to the top of their industry.
On this particular day, while surfing the internet, I came across the website of another Branding Consultant. I quickly became emersed in this consultant’s brand story. Her (Yes! A Lady Boss) personality leaped off every page of her website. It takes a lot to impress me. However, all I could say was “WOW.” That is the goal, right; to convince website visitors and potential clients to love you and have to work with you?
However, here was the problem. I started to compare what I saw to my own brand. From the visuals, brand position, all the way to the brand associations. Before I knew it, I had spent my entire workday looking at this website. I even wanted to shut down my website and social media accounts & start all over. Yes! I had fallen into the trap; the trap of envying another’s brand. Can you believe it? The proclaimed “Branding Expert” by colleagues had taken a fall. While I did not stay down long, I want to emphasize that I had stopped focusing on what made me great because I did not believe that what “Clinton” offered was good enough. For some reason, those things that made me feel incompetent started to rise to the surface.
That is a significant problem that many entrepreneurs face. We do not want to admit it, but it is true. Insecurity is very real and coupled with the need to position yourself as the best in your industry will blur your vision; if you let it. In some cases, this is the cause for the rise of saturated industries. Where are the entrepreneurs who want to shine brightly as a diamond as themselves? You have to reassure yourself that you are more than enough. You have to own your shortcomings as much as your greatness. You must walk in the authority and boldness that you were created to walk in. It will be a daily process, but I promise it will help you build a unique brand, experience a fulfilling career, and live an abundant life. Doesn’t that sound amazing? So to my fellow entrepreneurs, I say “stay true to your own business & stop worrying about what your competitors are doing. Simply put “Focus On Being Yourself!”
